Instructions for Changing Your UNIX Password

 

Logging in to UNIX through SSH

1.      You may install SSH through the following navigation:

StartàNUnetàInstall ProgramsàInternet AccessàReinstall DataFellows SSH v2.012.

Click [OK] for each prompt, and reboot when the installation is complete.

 

2.      With SSH installed, you may access it with the following navigation:

StartàNUnet Applications (Installed Locally)àInternet AccessàData Fellow SSH v2à

F-Secure SSH Tunnel and Terminal

 

3.      At the prompt, type the appropriate server name in the Host Name or IP address field.

Examples:  mudslide.acs.neu.edu, igneous.neu.edu

 

  1. Type your UNIX login name in the User Name field and your assigned password in the Password field.

Please note that the password is case sensitive.

 

5.      Click [OK].

 

Changing the UNIX password

The new password:       

Ø      must be 6-8 characters long

Ø      must contain at least two letters and one number

Ø      cannot be your login name, the reverse of your login name, or your login name shifted by one or more characters

Ø      must differ from the old one by at least three characters

A good password is 7 or 8 characters long containing a combination of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters and punctuation marks.

 

1.      At the prompt, type:                yppasswd

 

2.      You will get the message:

Changing password for ……..  (your UNIX login name)

Old Password:                 Type in the assigned or old password.  [Enter]

 

3.      You will then be prompted to type the

New password:               Type your new password.  [Enter]

 

4.      You will be prompted to

Re-enter new password:  Type it again.  [Enter]

 

5.      If the two match, your password is changed, and you will see:

passwd changed on ……..

If you get an error, enter the new password again.

 

** BE SURE TO REMEMBER YOUR NEW PASSWORD! **
